2010- A Year in Review

Quite a few of the blogs I follow are doing a year end post on their favorite things from the past year -which I really am enjoying reading. However I thought it may be more fun to do a recap on some of the things that made me say "What The What?" this year. Some of the things may not be new to 2010 but made me take notice and shake my head in disbelief/shock/general confusion this year.
I'd love to hear your "What The What?" moments too!

Dear Santa- I need another week!

I can't believe today is the 15th. Seriously,I really need at least 2 more weeks but I won't be greedy I'll just take one.

I usually have all my cookies done by now but they're not even close. When I went to start them yesterday this is what my baking supplies cabinet looked like

I ended up making only peanut butter blossoms  mainly because most of the ingredients weren't in the cabinet but in my garage pantry which I didn't have to fight to get into.

Sophia is freaking out about the cookies but I lost the entire last weekend with what appeared to be a gallbladder attack.
I like to make as many gifts as possible but so far I only completed two

I still have 2 sets of hurricane lamps to make, all the rest of the cookies, a class party to run, a girl scout trip, hubby's birthday, finish decorating and wrap EVERYTHING.

So if anyone knows how to get that extra week please let me know I really, really need it!

#2. Favorite
There are many many version of this movie(remember the one with Mr. Magoo?) but this one is my absolute favorite. I think George C. Scott was born  to play old Ebeneezer

It's a 3 way tie

I have seen this movie countless times but when Chevy Chase goes down the hill on that saucer sleigh
I still laugh till I cry

 Will Farrell
As an elf
in yellow tights
'nuff said
It just wouldn't be Christmas without the 24 hour marathon of this movie.

I have seen all these movies so many times that I can pretty much recite them word for word but for me it's just a part of the holidays I never want to let go of.

My Favorite Things Giveaway

A few days ago I  linked up with My Favorite Things 2010 from  one of my favorite blogs, 320 Sycamore.
I had a lot of fun and learned that I have quite a favorite things in common with some of my follow bloggers.
This morning I got an e-mail from my friend Lisa who said she got so excited when she saw the post name. She thought I would be having a giveaway like Oprah. It got me thinking "why not"? Now I can't do a giveaway on Oprah's level( sorry guys no new cars for you) but I can offer one of my favorite things

My  absolute favorite body oil. Many of you mentioned that you'd like to try it so why do you try to win one for yourself!
I'm giving away 2 bottles of Johnson's Baby Oil Gel to 2 lucky readers.

If you didn't catch the previous post let me just tell you this stuff rocks! I get the worst dry  & itchy skin in the winter. It had gotten so bad that I have woken up with bruises on my legs from scratching myself so hard in my sleep.
Then I found this and it's a miracle worker. I leave a bottle of it in the shower and apply while I'm still wet. It seals in the moisture and your skin feels like silk.Best part is you're not even the least bit greasy. The scent is just delicious and very mild

If you would like to enter to win one of two bottles all you need to do is this:

Leave a comment and tell my one of your favorite things

For additional entries, you can:

Become a follower of my blog, or let me know you already are

 Follow me on twitter

Blog or tweet about this  giveaway(or both)

Make sure you leave separate comments for each thing you do.
Be sure to leave me a way to contact you if you win

I'll be running this contest until Monday November 29 when I'll randomly generate a winner
Good luck and thanks for entering!

Comments are gone

Just wanted to thank you all for leaving such nice comments about my favorite things. Unfortunately somehow all but 2 of the comments are now missing but I read and loved them all.

I have a a few answers to some questions I received about my favorite things:

I get the Roesbud salve at and at Bath & Bodyworks

I also get the Mrs.. Meyers at but I know it's available at Bed Bath & Beyond & at the Mrs. Meyers website. If it's available elsewhere I'd love to hear where.

You can get the baby oil at just about any mass merchandiser or drug store.

My Favorite Things Link Party

I decided to link up with one of my favorite blog's link party

Here are five of my favorite things

Smith's RoseBud Salve

Love this stuff.Sophia and I get wicked chapped lips in the winter and this stuff nips it in the bud( get it "in the bud"Anyway.). I also use it to exfoliate my lips, tame runaway eyebrows, mend rough cuticles and pretty much anywhere skin needs healing. I have tins all over the house in my purse.
I purchase it at or at bath and body works

Johnson's Baby Oil Gel
I use this right before I get out of the shower. It locks in the moisture so your skin stays silky soft. Even though it is a oil gel I never feel greasy. A must have for the winter. And the smell is just delicious!

Williams Sonoma Melamine Mixing Bowls

I use these bowls almost every day. They're lightweight, have a footed base with non-slip grip and a pour spout.  I love the wide handle too.

Mrs. Meyers All purpose Cleaner Geranium

I've been using this cleaner for a few years now and I just love it. I use it full strength to clean the toilets, diluted the clean the floors both laminate and ceramic) and I add it with water to a spray bottle for the counters. A little goes a long way with this so one bottle lasts a really long time. It's biodegradable and the scent is very mild but very nice.

This is one of new my favorite shows. The writing is just fantastic. I literally laugh hysterically when watching  this show. Best part Chevy Chase is back on t.v. This is a clip from one of my favorite episodes

What's Yours?

Take a second and check out the party-lots of other favorite things

Thursday's Three

These are my 3 favorite ways to make easy money on line

1.Swagbucks- is a  rewards site. Swagbucks. allows web users to earn virtual currency by doing the things they do every day - search the web, shopping at their favorite retailers, and by engaging in other activities such as phone recycling, submitting polls, and completing special offers. I have their toolbar
& I  always use it when I'm searching the web.I have redeemed my swagbucks for $45.00 into my Pay Pal account in the last couple of months. I easily get between 5- 17 swagbucks a day.

2. Ebates-  Cash back for shopping. If I plan on doing any shopping online and I do most of my shopping online I always see if the site I plan on shopping at is a member of ebates. They have over 1200 merchants so I usually but not always shop through them. This month alone I am getting a check for $19.00 for doing absolutely nothing more than shopping. Before I click through their store link I first do a google search(which I go to through swagbucks) to see if the site I'm shopping at has any discount codes. I then go back to ebates click through their link, get cash back( I've received anywhere from 3%-30%) and whatever the store code was offering(free shipping, gift with purchase etc.)

3.My Points- This one is a little different. You can still shop through them but you get points which you can trade in for gift cards instead of cash back. I also signed up for their e-mails.I get anywhere from 5-15 emails per day from them and when you click through them you get points. I recommend it you do this you first set up a free e-mail account and use that account for site like this. I also do the occasional survey through them. Last month I got a $25.00 Target gift card with my points.

So these are three very easy ways to make easy money. All 3 sites have referral incentives too. Refer your friends make even more.
So lets recap:
Swagbucks $45.00
Ebates $19.00
My points $25.00
Total- $89
Not a bad haul for doing nothing more then I would be doing anyway! BTW... when I was getting the links to my points I searched it in the swagbucks search engine and won 10 swagbucks!

Feel the burn...

I was recently contacted by Jessica Costello-a writer for Gym Source and a personal trainer- about an article she wrote about easy exercising around the holiday season. I've mentioned before that my main source of exercising is walking. I love it-except in the winter. Pretty much the only exercise I get now is walking from my studio to the basement to do laundry, back up to the studio with a detour to the kitchen.Throw in the extra holiday goodies and by January I'm a slug with blond highlights.

The past two weeks I've been doing Jessica's work-out and I honestly feel better. It's easy, fast and doesn't cost a thing. So without any further blabbering here's her workout:

Stay Fit During the Holidays with 10 Easy Exercises

Question: What's the best form of exercise?

Answer: The one you'll actually do!

As long as your fitness program:

A. Raises your heart rate

B. Has a strength training component

C. And is done at least thirty minutes a day five days a week – you'll experience significant health benefits.

Variety is the spice of life; it keeps you motivated and works better for your body by working different muscle groups. You don't need to go to a gym and use fitness equipment. In fact, here are ten simple, yet effective exercises you can do in the comfort of your own home that can help prevent putting on holiday weight:

1. Take a Hike/Stroll

It's also simple, low-impact and easy on the joints – just put on a comfortable pair of shoes, step outside and walk at a fairly brisk pace around your neighborhood. It's a great way to clear the head and improve your mood – it may be cold, but will give you an opportunity to enjoy all the lights and decorations for the holiday season.

2. Jump!

Act like your kids on Christmas morning! Jump up and down, or do some jumping jacks. They're a great way to get the heart pumping and the limbs loosened up. 15-20 repetitions with a minute or two of rest between sets for thirty minutes should be sufficient. This will increase endurance and work on toning your thighs.

3. "Drop and Give Me 20, Soldier!"

Push-ups confer all the same strength-training benefits of bench presses with barbells – without the risk of handling heavy weights and need for a "spotter." You can adjust the intensity by elevating your feet. Push-ups do more than work your arms, they are a total body workout.

4. Lift That Leg

This provides a strength training workout for the thighs and adductors (muscles that attach the upper leg to the hip). If you can't manage leg lifts with a straight leg, bend the knee.

5. Washboard Abs?

You may not get "ripped" by doing crunches, but you'll definitely work your ab muscles – and this will award real benefits to your back as well, and you will see an improvement in toning your abs.

6. You Can Keep Running In Place...

...and you should. This is an exercise you can do while watching TV, making the "boob tube" actually good for something. You can also do it while stringing popcorn on the string for the tree.

7. The Squatters...

No, we don't mean settling land that isn't yours – it's what you do every time you sit in and get up from a chair. Just do it several times until you "feel the burn...", and

8. Household Weight Equipment

Cans of food, milk and water jugs, sacks of flour – you'd be amazed at how much weight training equipment is just sitting in your pantry or refrigerator. (Who knew your could actually lose weight with using your holiday baking ingredients?)

9. Roll Up The Carpet

The latest craze is dancing off the weight, but not all of us can get to the classes when they are offered and the videos cost more than Christmas. Instead roll up the carpet, and crack up the tunes, whether it's Mariah Carey's "All I want for Christmas" or whatever is on the radio, dancing will increase your aerobic hear rate, and help with endurance training.

10. Steppin' Up

Finally, you don't have to buy a bench step and sign up for a step class to do step. Chances are you've got a step or two around your home. So while those cookies are in the oven, run the stairs a few times. The timers will make great intervals and keep you fit while baking!

The fact of the matter is, that all of these are not difficult, and do not require patience, or a long drawn out explanation. They are simple and they WORK. So maybe you aren't getting fit on treadmills, or ellipticals, but the end result is the same and you will have a lot of extra cash to go and spend it on holiday gifts, or a treat for yourself!

The Big Apple Circus is Back!

I was recently contacted about doing a post about the Big Apple Circus. Normally I would turn down a request to blog about something that I hadn't personally tested, seen or used but being that I have been to this circus in the past(just not this version)I figured it was ok.

Let me start by saying I'm not a circus person-just not my thing-but I love this circus!

First off it's in Lincoln Center which is normally a beautiful site to see.For the holidays-extremely beautiful site to see.It will be there from now to Jan. 9th
Secondly there is not a bad seat in the show.Every seat is no more than 50 feet from the ring. When we saw it we were in the "cheap seats" and I could see and more importantly Gabby could see everything clearly.

Third and by for the most important is the talent. The performers were just amazing !.I could not wait to see what was coming next. I even enjoyed the clowns which to be perfectly honest usually annoy me. They were absolutely hilarious!

From their press release:

The spectacular Big Apple Circus ( leaps into its 33rd Season with a thrilling All-New Show, Dance On! The World’s Greatest Circus artists swing into action in the spotlight under our intimate Big Top, where no seat is more than 50 feet from the ring! Invited to the dance: an awesome troupe of monocyclists and lasso twirlers from China! A mind–bending group of Mongolian contortionists! A kinetic collection of Kenyan athletes who shimmy up a pole as though gravity were a joke! A herd of hoofers — twelve miniature horses in an equine chorus line! And an Ethiopian juggler with a lively up–tempo act that’s hard to beat! Your Host is our charming and charismatic Ringmaster Kevin Venardos, aided with antic abandon by star clowns Rob Torres and of course, our leggy, lovable laugh–riot Grandma! With live music by the Big Apple Circus Band, there’ll be cavorting in the aisles — and even the audience will be dancing in their seats!

If you are interested in seeing the show I have discount codes for you!
Online: and submit the code MOMMY11 in the Promotional Codes box in the lower left of the page
By Phone: Call 888-541-3750 and mention code MOMMY11
With the discount the tickets are very reasonable and it's a really fun show!

Bloggin' Buddies I Need Your Vote

Technically it's Sophia's class that need your vote. Her teacher asked if I would post about this wonderful opportunity for her class to get great prizes  for use in the classroom.

Here's more info on the contest:

We Are Teachers” is a site that allows teachers to share ideas and win grants. Ms. Falasco has entered an idea for her classroom website in order to win $200 to help fund our project and an iPod Nano or Flip Video Camera.
With this money and product, students will learn more about the different technology opportunities such as creating websites, videos, blogs as well as basic typing skills. They will learn that our classroom is not just run by the teacher but by everyone working together, collaboratively. The students will also learn that this is a community and their thoughts and ideas are important!

It’s easy! Follow the link below and type in your name and email address. Make sure the box is checked off so you don’t receive any future emails from them! Thanks for your help!

Right now her class in in second place but they only need to be in the top ten to win the prizes. So please take a quick second to vote. Voting ends Nov.11th

Thanks All!

Friday Fabulous Find

I've made it known in past posts that I am a health & beauty junkie. Getting samples of the newest body lotion, face cream, lip gloss etc. gets me weak in the knees. What you don't know is that I'm a bit of a foundation snob. I would only use the high-end department store brands. After all being that it was $35.00 for a bottle it had to be the best right?
I recently ran out of my foundation but being that I'm trying to cut out all un-necessary spending I figured I would go back to trying the drug store brands-something I hadn't done in about 15 years.I'm so glad I did.
The foundation I purchased was Covergirl Simply Ageless Anti-Aging Foundation & it was only $11.99
I have never been good at color-matching so I figured I would try the color Ellen Degeneres wears in her ads as I have the same coloring she does. The color is Classic Ivory and it's a perfect match.
The foundation has swirls of Olay Regenerist Serum in it which blends with the makeup when you apply it.
The first day I wore it I wasn't too thrilled. I had done my morning  skin routine: wash, apply serum, moisturizer, primer then makeup. By midday the foundation was sliding off my face. Not too pretty.
The next day I was running late so all I did was wash and makeup. The was the trick- the foundation looked great all day! I didn't need the extra skin prep. That night I was sitting across from my friend Lisa in a school cafeteria which does not have the most flattering light and she commented on how nice my skin looked. This was 12 hours after I put on the make-up with not one touch all day.
The foundation has great coverage without having a thick overdone appearance. It doesn't settle in my pores or the pesky little lines either.
I've been wearing it for about 2 weeks now and my skin actually looks and feels better.
Buh-bye department store overpriced makeup I'm happily going back to the drug store!

Ever have one of those days...

Let me start wih an open letter to the rude parents at my daughter's school,

Good morning lady in big white truck. So sorry that the rules for dropping off our children are so hard for you to follow. I really appreciate you parking your car right in front of the doors and getting out and entering the school when you are only supposed to drop off your child and pull away so the cars behind you may do the same.So sorry the extra 30 feet to park where you're suppose to park is just too far for you to walk. However it's apparently not too far for my daughter to walk carry her saxophone which weighs about half her weight. And her heavybook bag.In the rain. In case you were wondering it was me that flipped you off as I had to maneuver around you to get out. You didn't see it because you were still in the school but know it was done. Please let me know what else I can do to make your life easier. Have a nice day.

As for you Mr. "I'm too important to wait in line like everyone else so I'll just cut right to the front"-yep-it was me who honked at you as soon as the light turned green just to piss you off.

I'm feeling kinda cranky today-I got 3 hours sleep last night, have lots work, fighting off a cold and I'm really, really PMS-ing. It is obvious?
Hope you all are in a better mood

Friday Fab Find-Breast Cancer Awareness & Bonus Code

Those who know me well know I am a big supporter of breast cancer awareness. I fortunately have never had breast cancer but I have had 2 breast tumors removed,2 more core biopsied and 2 more currently being watched. I've been lucky however I have several women in my life who haven't been as fortunate and I'm sure there are some many of you out there who have been similarly affected.

Here are some breast cancer statistics:

  1. 1 in 8 women in the United States will  develop breast cancer in her lifetime
  2. In 2010, 207,090 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in women in the U.S.
  3. Approx. 39,840 women are expected to die from this disease in 2010 & this number is down from 1991!
  4. Approx. 70%-80% of breast cancer occurs in women with no family history of the disease
These statistics frankly suck and we all need to work together to help improve them however we can

For the month of October I proudly raise money for the Susan G Komen Foundation on both my sites

At Drama Queen Bows & Jewels I donate 70% of the proceeds from the sale of everything pink
At Its All About The Jewels I donate 70% of the  proceeds from the

To motivate you to buy pink I am offering the following bargains:

$5.00 off $10 or more using code "PINK" at checkout
$10 off $50 or more using code "REALLYPINK" at checkout

$5 off $15 or more with code BLOGBUDDIES

I only offered the last code to my readers but if you know someone that would use it feel free to pass it along.

Thursday's Three

Today's three are the 3 main rules I choose to live my life by

  1. Treat others the way you would like to be treated. Self explanatory

  2. Judge other by their character only. This is the rule I am always trying to drive home to the girls. We live a society where more and more we judge people by what they have, look like, drive, who they love, where they live and less and less by who they are as a person. I hate this. I try very hard not to do it.

  3. Do a random act of kindness everyday. It doesn't have to be a grandiose gesture just a little something. Leave a nice comment on a favorite blog, let someone go first at a stop sign, let someone go ahead of you at a checkout. When you get the chance to do a big kindness never pass it up.
These are my simple life rules. Don't get me wrong-I'm so far from perfecting my rules that it's not even close to being on the radar. In fact I happily consider myself a sarcastic, snarky(is that how it's spelled?) pain in the butt most of the time but by trying to follow my rules helps me become the woman I want to be and to mold my daughters into the women I hope to see them become.

If this post comes across preachy-I assure it's not intentional. It's just a little bit put out there so you can learn a bit more about what makes me tick

Being that I'm stuck in my studio today and won't be out to do my random act so I figure I'll do it here.

I will randomly pick anyone who comments on this post to win a pair of earrings

Don't' want them for yourself? They make a great holiday gift

I'll pick the winner on Monday 9/27

Sophia's Alice in Wonderland Tea Party

I mentioned briefly in my previous post that for Sophia's birthday this year the theme was Mad Hatter's Tea Party. Sophia loves her themed parties- she's had a under the sea party, carnival party, puppy party but this year we were stuck on ideas under Gabriella suggested the tea party. She's so smart. We had a great time planning the party.
I really wanted to stick to a budget of $150.00  which surprisingly wasn't as hard as I thought it would be.
We spent the summer searching local thrift shops, yard sales and the goodwill store to find mismatched tea cups and saucers and servers. We were able to get all the teacups for between $1.00-$3.00 each-not a bad deal.

The most expensive item  at $42.00 was Sophia's dress

We purchased it our favorite tween boutique Beverly Frills (don't ya just love the name)
We weren't even looking for it when we found it there. We just happened to wander in one day and there it was just screaming Alice-best part it was on clearance! Sophia also wore it to the wedding we went to in Delaware earlier in the summer.

Gabriella was dressed like the mad hatter. Shirt & hat were on clearance at Claire's and the skirt was full price at a whopping $13.00. One .99 cent can of orange hair spray and she was set

The best deal  I got were the tablecloths

I bought an entire bolt of upholstery fabric for $1.00 at a yard sale. It was enough to cover 2- 6' tables,1- 4' tables and 3 snack trays.

I used turquoise and hot pink plates and napkins and spray painted all the serving trays and bowls in the same colors

I made the hanging flowers using a tutorial I found here

The Candy Bar
The Hurricanes

Gabby did "makeunders" on the girls
Rebecca as the red queen

Madison as the white queen

We made little jewels boxes which were filled with candy jewelry

We played a game where 2 teams of girls had to fill a bucket of one end of the yard from another bucket at the other end using a teacup to transfer the water

We also played Alice bingo- I just download a bingo card change "bingo" to "Alice" and made the spaces all Alice themed words.

Party girls

Tea Anyone?

The girls took home their teacups. Sophia specifically picked out the teacups for each of her guests
I mentioned in another post that I was going to try to make a Topsy turvy cake.
Unfortunately I lost my nerve and ended up making a plain stacked cake.
This was only my second time using fondant and I have decided this is probably my last time using fondant!

The fondant cracked big time on the bottom layer of the cake and when I tried to remove it it only made it worse. The second and third layers were OK-not great just OK. Fortunately I bought cutters  in the shape of flowers so I ended up cutting out tons of white flowers which mercifully hid all my decorating shortcomings. I was lucky to have my best friend Linda to help me or I would have never would have gotten the cake done. Sophia didn't know I was making her the cake so I did the baking here and decorating at Linda's house

I also made a dozen and a half cupcakes in each the same flavor of the cake layers- carrot, red velvet and lemon. I wanted to have a backup if the cake was a complete bomb.

All and all the party went well, that kids had a great time,Sophia loved her surprise cake and I stayed on budget.

Big thanks to my friend Christine for taking these photos for me
